The Inpaint feature in Tess AI lets you easily edit images, swap out elements, and change backgrounds with real precision. This step-by-step guide will walk you through the whole process, from picking the AI model to explaining how the Mask tool works.
Step 1: Choosing the InPaint AI Model
In Tess AI, you'll see a bunch of image AI models, each with its own strengths and features. Which one you pick depends on the kind of edit you want to make. In this case, since we want to swap elements within the image, we'll go for the InPaint ones. To choose, just use the Tess model selector.
Between the InPaint V1 and V2 models, the second one is the newest, so it's usually the one that gives the best results.
Step 2: Picking Your Images
After picking the template, import the image you want to edit. To do that, open the Advanced Settings panel and drop it into the “Similar Image” field. Tess supports all kinds of image sizes, but your inspiration image will be cropped based on the chosen size.
Step 3: Creating the Mask
You'll notice that besides the Similar Image field, Inpaint also has the “Similar Image Mask” field, and that's where the magic happens.
With the Mask, we'll mark which areas of the image will be changed. Masks are made out of just two colors (black and white). White shows what area to edit; black means the bit to keep as is. That's exactly the difference we're marking in our image.
Identify the Editing Area: Clearly define the area you want to change, whether it’s an object to remove, a damaged spot to restore, or a section to modify, following the colors mentioned above.
Use Drawing Tools: Tess AI has drawing tools, like Path, that you can use to make the mask by hand. Pick the color to fill, then outline the whole object. Paint white on the spot you want to change. Then, using the brush, fill in the rest (what you want to keep in the image).
Important: This only applies to the image from the “Similar Mask Image” field. The image upload option called “Similar Image” will stay the same
The process of making the Mask is shown in the next two images:
1- Select the part to keep (in black)
2- Select the part to change (in white)
Step 4: Structuring the Prompt
Once the mask is done, now we need to generate our image, and for that we're going to use a prompt. The prompt is your instruction for the AI. It describes what you want to happen in the selected white area. Be clear and only describe what you want to replace.
Prompt example: Nighttime snowy street scene, high-resolution image, realistic style, main focus on a street decorated for Christmas, snow-covered pavement reflecting soft street lights, festive decorations like string lights and wreaths on lamp posts, a gentle snowfall adding a serene atmosphere, wide-angle view capturing the essence of a quiet holiday evening, photorealistic.
